It was an experience that I will most likely never experience again. Wednesday started out like any other day, but students really started to get excited around noon. Groups of students left the school and headed to the stadium for the big rally. I left around 1 p.m. and headed for the stadium to get a good seat. There were a lot of people arriving at the stadium, but it wasn’t jam-packed. I went through the metal detectors and entered the stadium with no problem. I waited in line for no longer than five minutes, which was great. After taking a seat for a while, I decided to get up and walk around a while.
I walked around the stadium taking pictures and shooting video of the event. I think the best part of the whole rally was just being there experiencing history in my hometown. I know a lot of my friends had a great time being with the press and witnessing the event.
I had a great spot to shoot video from when McCain and Palin got off the bus. It was unbelievable seeing a presidential candidate right under my nose. I snapped pictures as fast as my camera would take them. It was tough because I was trying to take video and still pictures at the same time.
Obama sucks shirts
When I saw a shirt that said “Obama sucks” I was outraged. Why would they make such a negative shirt for people to wear? I can understand selling McCain Palin shirts, but Obama sucks shirts was really a poor choice. Then on Thursday some students wore these shirts to school and I really went off on them The idea of these shirts just blows my mind away. Negative campaigning is in full swing with only a few days left until Election Day.
Overall a great time
Overall I had a really good time and it was a great learning experience for everyone. It was a little strange being at a McCain rally when I am an Obama supporter, but it was worth it. I am so glad that I attended this event that I will remember for the rest of my life.
Experience of a lifetime
October 24, 2008Full coverage Wednesday
October 22, 2008The rally is knocking on the door and I will be doing my best to bring you the best coverage of the event. I plan to take pictures and hopefully video at the event. I will be blogging during the event in my notebook and posting it online right after the event is over.
I am hoping to get student and teacher reaction, the atmosphere of the event, what the McCain and Obama campaign are saying and much more.
Look for updated through the day on Wednesday as I cover most likely the biggest event of my life.
Tuesday Reaction
October 22, 2008Everyone is talking politics because McCain and Palin are going to be in Green tomorrow. I am still getting over how big this event is for our city. No matter the candidate it’s important we take time to think about how important this rally is for our city. The nice thing is that the dance team and cheerleaders will be performing at the rally, which will keep us
Entertained while we wait for John McCain.
Today some advisors came in and spoke with my government class about all the planning that goes into a rally like this. They told us that at the most four days are put into planning a huge event like this. Also they noted that every detail must be figured out or else problems could arise.
It was really cool that News Channel 5 came in and took video of my journalism class. Our class made it onto the six p.m. news. I really enjoyed being on the news. The hours are winding down until the big event and it seems everyone’s mind is on the rally and nothing else. It’s going to be interesting to see how they are going to get 10,000 – 15,000 people into the stadium. Tomorrow is the big day and I am really excited for this once and a lifetime event.
Monday Reaction
October 22, 2008Each day I will write a reaction to the events leading up to the McCain rally.
When I first heard that John McCain and Sarah Palin were coming to Green I was shocked. Why Green? Why not Obama? As I entered school on Monday I ran into a friend of mine Bobby who said, “McCain and Palin are coming to Green”. I thought oh great is this all I’m going to hear all day. Walking into government class I was a little frustrated that it was McCain not Obama coming to Green. My government teacher made me feel a lot better because he told us to put our party affiliation aside and focus on this once and a lifetime event. I thought and thought and came to a conclusion that I was going no matter what. When in the future would a presidential candidate ever come to Green again? Most likely never so I decided this was a must attend event. You could really feel the energy flowing through the school as teachers and students talked about the rally.
